make Ajax Slideshows with Google Ajax Feed In Your Blogger

Today I have something very unique to share with my readers and fellow bloggers. I will be providing a simple tutorial on how to make Ajax Slideshows with the Google Ajax Feed API and how to easily embed them in your website or blog.
Google Ajax Slideshows
For those who don't know Google Ajax Slideshow is a simple application of the Google AJAX Feed API that is designed to let you add photo slide shows to your pages, sites, and blogs. The slide show control takes photo feeds from all popular sites, such as PhotoBucket, Flickr, and Picasa Web Albums. Any feeds that use Media RSS can be used without customization.

Things You Can Do with Ajax Slideshows
The Slide Show control is highly customizable, allowing you to specify options such as the number of photos to display, display and transition time between photos, how the photos link back to their source. Here are some amazing things you can do with with Google Ajax Slideshows
 • Make Slideshows of Your Personal Photos
 • Make Slideshows out of any Media Feed
 • Share Slideshows with Your Friends
 • Display Slideshows on Your Blog
For those Flickr and Photobucket Feed Sticker geeks this is the best thing so far.
How To Make Google Ajax Slideshow
I will be discussing particularly how you can embed the Google Ajax Slideshows in your Wordpress Blog. Lets say I want to make Ajax Slideshow of a Sunset Media Feed then here are the steps you need to follow to display the slideshow in your sidebar.
 1. Sign up for Ajax Feed API key for your blog
 2. Open header.php file in your theme and add this script code after body

3- Replace Your-Key with your real Ajax Feed API Key.
4- Open style.css and define some styling for your slideshow
#slideShow {
width : 300px;
height : 250px;
padding : 10px;
}

5- Call the script function anywhere in your sidebar using this code

Loading...

You are done

Add Google Ajax Feed To your Blogger Templates

blogger recent posts Ajax feed GoogleFirst of all, i want to give credits for New Blogger's (blogspot.com) recent posts widget using Google's Ajax Feed API to Hecto, i just modified the script to make it open in the same window, work with FeedBurner and a few other minor tweaks.

Now we can begin. You can see this New Blogger Recent Posts Widget using Google's Ajax Feed API in the right side of my blog. Move your mouse over it to see how it works.

1. You will need a key from Google which you can get in a second without any registration, by going to this link.

2. Go to your Blogger Dashboard > Layout > Edit HTML, check "Expand Widget Templates" and find:
and paste the following code above it

Change YOUR KEY with the key you got in point 1. The bold code above can be changed to suit your needs. numResults : 5 is the number of posts in this widget, change the number to the number of posts you want to show up in your recent posts widget. title : 'Recent Posts' can also be changed with the title you want for your widget, or you can remove title : 'Recent Posts' if you want your feed's default title to be displayed.

3. Create a new "HTML/JavScript" widget, then add this line to the content:

Loading...

Save it and you're done.

Customizing the recent posts Ajax widget

To change the font, colors and so on of your widget, modify the CSS styles:

#feedControl {
width : 353px;
margin-left : 1px;
background : white;
font-size: 13px;
float:left;
}
.gfg-title {
font-size: 17px;
border-bottom: 1px solid #307396;
font-weight: normal;
color : #BF0000;
background-color: #FFFFFF;
}
.gfg-title a {
color : #005580;
}
.gfg-root {
border: none;
font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
background-color : white;
}
.gfg-list {
background-color : white;
}
.gfg-listentry-odd {
background-color : white;
}
.gfg-entry {
background-color : white;
width : 100%;
height : 7.5em;
position : relative;
overflow : hidden;
text-align : left;
margin-top : 3px;
}
.gfg-listentry-highlight {
background-image : url('http://nilarimogard.googlepages.com/garrow.gif');
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-position : center left;
background-color : #F6F6F6;
}

To change the red arrow, save this image: http://nilarimogard.googlepages.com/garrow.gif, edit it with the color you want and upload yours to some host, then change it in the above code.

You cand find all the CSS elements for the Google Feed API, here.

All Feeds using FeedBurner

Integrate your FeedBurner feed with your blogger beta blog.

1) Feed Auto-Detection

Go to Layout > Edit HTML and find this line of code

<b:include data='blog' name='all-head-content'/>

which actually splits out something like this

when you view the page source (In Firefox click on View > Page Source).

YourBlogName stands for the title of your blog, yourblog.blogspot.com is your blog's url, and yourblogid is a long number, the id of your blog.

The two lines with link rel="alternate",

let newsreaders auto-detect your blogs feeds. So we have to change these lines to point them in the direction of your FeedBurner feed.

Remove the line:

<b:include data='blog' name='all-head-content'/>

Replace it with:

Replace http://feeds2.feedburner.com/yourblogname with the url of your FeedBurner feed.

Save Template.

Now that we have fixed the auto-detection part, there is still the issue of the feed-link on your posts page. This feed-link has to be made invisible, so that your visitor has no other option than following the link to your FeedBurner feed.

Go to Layout > Edit HTML and find this line

.feed-link {

Below the line add

display: none;

If there is no .feed-link class defined in your template, define it with:

.feed-link { display:none; }

Save Template.

Leave your comments and URL of your blog :)

Add Multiple Ajax Feeds In Blogger

Blogger currently offers two feed gadgets:
(1) FEED GADGET
where you can add content (maximum of 5 entries) from ONE RSS or Atom feed to your blog.
(2) BLOG LIST GADGET
where you can add MULTIPLE FEEDS (with ONE/latest entry for each feed) of your favorite blogs.

Don't you sometimes wish you can combine both and display MULTIPLE FEEDS with MULTIPLE ENTRIES for each feed?

Thanks to Dynamic Drive's gAjax RSS Feeds Displayer, this is possible.

To be specific, you may find it in action at my sidebar: TECH NEWS FEEDS section. Here, my subscription list includes feeds with multiple entries from DIGG Technology, PC Magazine, Reuter's Technology, SEObook, SEOmoz, Slashdot, and Yahoo Security.

Using gAjax RSS Feeds Displayer, you can display results from multiple feeds intermixed, sort them in a variety of ways, specify which components of each RSS entry to display, and more. Dynamic Drive

How to add it in Blogger? Here's how.

Before you start editing your template, make sure to DOWNLOAD
(1) gfeedfetcher.js (right click and choose "Save As") first and upload to your site (e.g. Google Pages if you have one).
(2) (right click and choose "Save Image As") and upload to your image hosting site (e.g. Photobucket or Imageshack. I use PicasaWeb)

Now, let's get started.

NOTE: BACKUP YOUR TEMPLATE!

1. Go to Layout. Edit HTML.
2. Before the closing tag of

insert the following code:

NOTE: Please look at the above code closely. For your API Key, go to Google Ajax API Key Page, type in your blog URL and click Generate API Key. Then, on the below code:

9. Save.
10. View Blog.

How to customize the Feed script

Below are the only codes that you need to change:

One.

socialfeed.addFeed("Slashdot", "http://rss.slashdot.org/Slashdot/slashdot")

where "Slashdot" is the title of your feed and
"http://rss.slashdot.org/Slashdot/slashdot" is the feed URL.

Two.

socialfeed.displayoptions("label datetime snippet")

where the display options can be set to include feed title ("label"), feed publishing date and time ("datetime"), and preview of feed ("snippet"). If you wish to include only the title and feed preview, kindly set the option to ("label snippet")

Three.

socialfeed.filterfeed(6, "label")

where 6 is the number of entries to be displayed and "label" is the sorting config meaning all feed entries will be sorted alphabetically by label.

FeedBurner Counter Animated and Static Count

Feedburner is a very popular feed aggregator and provides a host of services which you can tap on to publicize and promote your Blog. One widely used service is their FeedCount Chicklet which displays your Blog Feed's circulation statistics. The chicklet can be static (displaying the number of “readers”) or animated (showing the number of “readers” via feed). Although you can change the background and text color for the graphic display, there is no option for you to change the text. This hack will explain how to change and personalize the FeedCount Chicklet text as well as to change the animation settings so that it rolls the text more than once.

For those who have yet to sign up for a Feedburner account, consider doing so right away. Now that it is under the Google family, there is an easy way for you to channel all your Blogger feed subscribers to Feedburner. Login to Blogger, and under Settings -> Site Feed, enter your Blog's Feedburner Feed address into the box beside “Post Feed Redirect URL.” Readers who click the “Subscribe to: Posts (Atom)” link or the RSS icon in their browsers will be redirected to your Feedburner Feed.

FeedCount Chicklet

When you are logged into Feedburner account and are viewing your Feed details, click the Publicize -> FeedCount tab. This is where you can generate a code to display a chicklet in your Blog which shows the subscriber count. Whether or not you already have a high number of subscribers doesn't really matter. A nice chicklet can draw readers' attention and make it easy for them to click the Feed link.

Choose the custom colors of the body and text and click “Activate”. You will be given a HTML code for the Chicklet. We have to edit this code. Open MS Notepad (usually found under All Programs -> Accessories in Microsoft Windows) or a word processor program. Copy and paste this code.

Static FeedCount HTML Code

The static FeedCount code will look something like this:-

This is the standard FeedCount chicklet you see:-

Feedburner - FeedCount Chicklet Text

To change the word “readers” to some other text such as “Viewers”, insert this other code (shown in red). You can change the word “Viewers” to other text, but because of the space constraint, keep it to no more than 7 characters.

The FeedCount chicklet now looks like this:-

Feedburner - FeedCount Chicklet Text

You can change the text to capital letters or include characters, e.g., “*FANS*”, and your new FeedCount Chicklet will look like this:-

Feedburner - FeedCount Chicklet Text

Animated FeedCount HTML Code

The animated FeedCount code is rather similar except that the animation value is set as “1” instead of “0”.

When the page is loaded, viewers will see a one-time rolling text of number of “readers” via feed.

Tips for New Bloggers

The word “readers” can be changed to other text like “Members” by inserting the code (shown in red):-

This is the new FeedCount Chicklet you will see. Insert the relevant text that suits your Blog.

Tips for New Bloggers

Animation to play more than once

Other than the change in text, you can also set the animation to play more than once by changing the anim value to something greater than 1. Since readers are unlikely to stay on a page for too long, it need not be too big a value. When the page is refreshed, the animation count will start all over again.

Our animated FeedCount Chicklet will now look like this:-
